10 Reasons Why Marvel Will Never Make A Solo Black Widow Film
9. Executives Are Wary Of "Female Movies"
Earlier this year, the public gained an unprecedented look behind the scenes of studio filmmaking when 30,000 documents were leaked following the Sony Hack. A number of distressing email exchanges came to light, but one particularly inflammatory discussion between Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter and Sony CEO Michael Lynton caught the attention of fans worldwide. The subject line was simply titled "Female Movies". In the email, the two executives discuss three female led superhero movies and the reasons why they all failed, both commercially and critically. This damning exchange provided strong ammunition for those convinced that Marvel refuse to make a Black Widow movie due to past failures such as Elektra, Catwoman and Supergirl. This raises an important question though. Why would Marvel choose to base their first female led movie on a largely unknown heroine like Captain Marvel when they could take that "risk" on a proven property like Black Widow? Marvel may be moving forward with a solo Captain Marvel film, but in a recent announcement, the movie's projected release date was moved back from 2018 to 2019 in order to fit in the newly announced titles, implying that female led projects still aren't high on the agenda.
