10 Reasons Why Superman Isn't An Interesting Superhero

6. His Story Arcs Are Too Predictable

New-52-Superman-Comic-Con-2 Superman wins, good triumphs over evil. That's the greater moral to be taken from the majority of any Superman comic or movie. He punches things until they aren't evil anymore then he continues on just being good. Even when he is given an outcome to one of his stories that isn't predictable, like Lois Lane dying in the excellent Richard Donner Superman films, he still finds some way to save her. In that case it's reversing time, which enforces my earlier point about him being far too powerful to have any legitimate consequences to his actions. The best thing about The Dark Knight was the fact that Batman couldn't save Rachel Dawes. The same goes for Spider-Man when he inadvertently gets Gwen Stacy and Uncle Ben killed. Seeing them have to deal with the true repercussions of their actions makes for an infinitely more pleasing and human story. Once again, there is so much lying just under the surface to make Superman thought provoking that isn't explored. Just imagine a Superman story where he has to grapple with the fact that no matter how bad he wants to he can't save everyone. Seeing him actually have to choose who he is going to save adds a moral complexity to an otherwise bland character.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
