10 Reasons Why Tobey Maguire Is STILL The Best On-Screen Spider-Man
4. Mary-Jane Watson, The Girl Next Door
Love is a big part of Spider-Man, and no character brings out Peter’s romantic side like Mary-Jane Watson. She literally is the girl next door, and her on-screen relationship with Peter comes across as genuine and deeply rooted in their off-screen past.
MJ adds a tremendous aspect to the life of Spider-Man, making him consider what he truly wants in life, and their romance has given us one of the most iconic Spider-Man scenes of all time: upside-down kissing.
We can’t lie, Gwen Stacy was a very interesting character, and her death was a traumatic and gut-wrenching piece of Spider-Man cinema. But sadly, her connection to Peter just doesn’t hold the same appeal as MJ’s.
Gwen seems happy to start dating the unpopular nerd, and the danger of the superhero lifestyle doesn’t seem to strain their relationship. Sure, her dad’s dying words are a plea for Gwen to be left out of things, but that is isn’t respected for long.
And as for Tom Holland's version, his love life is rather flat. Lizzy is just the cool girl, and his version of MJ is absent for much of the first film, as their romance is sort of forced to happen. Her role in Homecoming is minimal, but by Far From Home it is suggested that they have been secretly attracted to one another all along. It doesn’t make much sense.
