10 Reasons Why Tobey Maguire Is STILL The Best On-Screen Spider-Man

5. The Best Best Friend

Tobey Maguire is a great Spider-Man, and part of that performance comes from how superbly he acts alongside Peter’s best friend, James Franco’s Harry Osborn. The relationship is loving, tense, secretive, yet brotherly, and it creates AMAZING scenes that audiences can’t help but love.

Peter’s greatest enemy is Harry’s father, and after Norman Osborn’s passing, there is a wedge between the duo that neither can acknowledge aloud. Spider-Man’s secret identity is always a tension-driver, but this friendship takes it to a whole other level, gradually culminating into a fierce rivalry by the third film.

Let’s now compare that to Andrew Garfield’s rendition. Harry Osborn returns but he appears from nowhere, having not seen Peter in a decade, and yet we are expected to feel the same brotherly connection amidst their gruelling physical battle.

They reacquaint too quickly and their friendship hasn’t got the foundation needed for that emotional layer to exist. It’s just not the same.

And as for the MCU, Ned is just something else altogether. He’s funny, goofy, and a good guy, but there’s not much else there for the audience to bite into. He’s ‘the guy in the chair’, which literally just means he doesn’t do much. Very funny, very sweet, but he’s no Harry.
