4. Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, Oh My

Let me start by saying that I love animated movies now more than I did when I was a kid. Pixar has really showed how good an animated movie can be. Their filmography speaks for itself and the quality of story, character, and plot demonstrates how much they care about essential film elements before they even start sketching out the movie. With that said, I don't think I'm alone in saying that there are too many animated movies out. In 1990, there were four animated movies released including "Jetsons: The Movie." In 2011, there were about 30 animated films released including straight to DVD. These films included "Rio" and "Kung Fu Panda 2." Hollywood has noticed that parents love their children, they love them so much that they'll pay to shut them up for 2 hours while you get your shut eye and they get to watch the loudmouthed donkey on the screen. Animated movies make a ton at the box office. Half of the top 10 grossing films in 2010 were animated movies. Whenever an animated movie is released, it usually rockets up to the top of the box office for that weekend because not only do people like me watch them, but there are millions of kids who finally have a movie specifically marketed to them to watch. When you're a kid, there aren't many options available to you that are parent approved, but the classic animation/cartoon movie will automatically have the parents' seal of approval. Why? It's a cartoon and it's rated G or PG, so they can rest assured that there will no unexpected boobs or F-bombs to shield their baby's eyes from. However, for the adults it's kind of a bummer because most girls want to watch the new Channing Tatum movie or the new Pixar flick, usually they settle for the Dreamworks or Disney option if it's there. I know there are some movie buff girls out there that want to watch "Killing Them Softly" or "Lincoln." God bless you. But having half of the options being animated movies is a bit daunting and discouraging. It doesn't show much faith in the average moviegoer as an adult. It's like we're all a bunch of kids to Hollywood and we'll take what we're given. No. We won't. We don't always like animated movies. Only sometimes when the kids aren't crying or throwing popcorn at their siblings. We want more movies. Good ones at that. So please, Hollywood, tone it down.
