5. Now in 3D!

We all knew what the whole 3D buzz was about. It was a gimmick. Another way for Hollywood to squeeze a few extra bucks out of the moviegoer. And it worked. "Avatar" made billions and every following movie featured "In 3D" as part of their taglines. The 3D craze became another way for Hollywood to recycle old movies and re-release them, "Now in 3D!" Numerous children's movies including "Finding Nemo" found themselves on the big screen again making several more million dollars at the box office. Although the 3D option has contributed to extremely high box office numbers (71% of Avatar's opening weekend revenue came from 3D screens), it appears that the public has wised up. 45% of Despicable Me's opening weekend box office revenue came from 3D screens and signs are indicating that the 3D phenomenon is looking less profitable. Most of the people I know aren't paying the $15 to watch a 3D movie, they'd rather pay $10 to enjoy it in 2D and save themselves the headache. The main reason why 3D is more irritating than not is because it shows how lazy Hollywood really is. They'd rather dust off an old film they've already made money off of and release it in 3D than to make original, creative movies that people can enjoy. The marketing ploy isn't anything new, most "new" products are just presented in a different container or color or style. The new Budweiser can isn't fooling anyone. It doesn't taste any more American than it did before. 3D is a virtual repackaging of movies we've already seen and the verdict is that we can do without random pop out scenes added for the sake of 3D, and prefer simple, good movies. In 2D. If only the children agreed...
