Spider-Man 2 was arguably the best comic book film, for a period at least. Now that new superhero movies are released yearly it has been knocked off this pedestal, but it reigned supreme for such a long time that whatever followed it was bound to be a disappointment. Doctor Octopus was a villain everyone empathised with, and the film's plot was one which kept audiences on the edge of their seats. The writing was spot on, and the action scenes expertly choreographed. This could not be easily topped, and its sequel was in the unenviable situation of trying to live up to this excessively high watermark. When Spider-Man 3 opened in cinemas audiences expected to be wowed by a similar show, but this never materialised because it was a virtually impossible task. Spider-Man 3 was not a bad film, but it was not as amazing or spectacular as its predecessor had been. This left the audience bitterly disappointed and meant that many felt the film failed outright, when in fact it had simply failed to meet their tremendously high expectations.
