10 Reboots/Sequels That Didn't Know Why The Originals Were Popular

7. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Avengers Age of Ultron
Fox

Wolverine has been the most popular member of the X-Men in comics and film for years, and the only one to receive a standalone film. Naturally, when an origin movie was announced, there was a good deal of excitement surrounding the project.

When the fans were given X-Men Origins: Wolverine, they were disappointed. The film was not content to neuter Logan with its weak love story and cliched revenge plot, but the movie's primary problem was its premise.

In 2000's X-Men, the intrigue surrounding Logan's cloudy past was why he was a conflicted and complex character. The audience should have been fed vague details that explain why his past weighs so heavily on him, but let the brunt of the work be done by collective imagination.

Fox either didn't know or didn't care that they could never invent a backstory for Logan that could top the mystery surrounding him. When something so vital is taken away from the character, it doesn't clear up Logan's past, it just makes it boring.

I wrote two books and a few articles. They're probably okay.
