3. The Talokanil Breathing Masks - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is quite obviously jam-packed with visual effects that draw absolute attention to themselves, but there's also a ton of sneaky CGI concealed quite brilliantly in plain sight.
For instance, the first-act scene in which Okoye (Danai Gurira) battles the Talokanil on the bridge was actually shot on a set, with only the ground of the bridge being a real, practical element - the entire skyline was quite seamlessly composited in post-production.
But perhaps the least noticeable effect in the entire movie is a devilishly simple one.
You'll surely recall that the Talokanil wear respirator-like masks which allow them to breathe outside of water, and while this might seem like an incredibly straight-forward piece of practical costuming, it didn't actually exist on set.
Indeed, the film's VFX breakdown (3:50 in the clip below) reveals that the Talokanil performers simply wore the outline of the mask on their faces, and the sealed blue covering was actually added later.
There are several possible reasons for this - perhaps the design wasn't entirely finalised at the time of shooting, or maybe it was a practical concern to keep the cast members more comfortable while filming.
Either way it's a completely invisible effect, so bravo.
