10 Recent Films That Totally Blew The Ending

4. Host

On the Rocks Bill Murray Rashida Jones
Shudder

It's easy to cut this found footage horror film a ton of slack, considering that it was produced entirely in quarantine during the middle of a pandemic in a mere three months.

And while Host is for the most part a well-crafted, of-the-moment horror yarn, it sadly doesn't quite sustain all the way to the finish line, even with a respectably tight 57-minute runtime.

Though the bulk of the film takes a "less is more" approach to paranormal shocks, the final moments ultimately crib lazily from the dog-eared horror movie handbook.

In the climax, the two remaining characters, Jemma (Jemma Moore) and Haley (Haley Bishop), meet up and attempt to escape Haley's house using her Polaroid camera to help light the way to the exit.

After a few flashes, though, they're attacked by the demon, which is visible on-screen for a few frames before the Zoom call expires. The End.

Between the cliche camera flash trick - which is easily one of the most over-used horror tropes of recent years - and the cheap jump scare, this was quite a hackneyed ending indeed.

Again, though, it doesn't invoke quite as much ire considering the evident constraints the production was under.
