10 Recent Horror Comedy Movies You Need To Stop Sleeping On

1. PG: Psycho Goreman

Steven Kostanski's Psycho Goreman is a rare beast indeed - a low-budget, practical effects-led, straight-to-streaming comedy horror that looks like the Power Rangers and plays out like a live-action Rick and Morty on steroids, which not only doesn't suck but might be the best thing in Shudder's entire catalogue.

The titular Mr. Goreman (Matthew Ninaber) is a galaxy-smashing space titan who seeks to annihilate Earth and the entire universe with it, but thanks to an unfortunate link he has with a magical gem he finds himself under the thrall of sociopathic middle-schooler Mimi (Nita-Josee Hanna). Mimi herself lives a life of mild absurdity, trampling over her parents, brother, the police, and the neighbourhood with a largely amoral agenda. Despite the killer alien’s threats of torture and destruction, Mimi is unfazed, and this relationship provides the horror-comedy backbone for the whole escapade.

And yet, in the face of this irresistible setup, hardly anyone has been able to see Psycho Goreman. The pandemic derailed its South by Southwest premiere, and after managing a couple of smaller festival appearances along the way, it was acquired by Shudder. Now, as mentioned, Shudder is a great place for horror fans, but it also creates a limited viewership bubble for the films it hosts. Well, consider that bubble popped!
