6. Maiming Mum - Run (2020)

Daniel Isnt Real Hell
Lionsgate

Run sees wheelchair-bound Chloe Sherman (Kiera Allen) under the rule of Apache helicopter parent Diane (Sarah Paulson), who controls every single last aspect of her disabled daughter's life, from medication to schooling and beyond.

Suffering from arrhythmia, asthma, diabetes, hemochromatosis and partial paralysis, Chloe has had a rough ride, but the discoveries she makes when digging up dirt on her medication make the whole situation a heck of a lot worse. An Annie Wilkes for the Zed generation, Diane has been poisoning Chloe with, amongst other things, dog medication in order to keep her ill, under control and -- perhaps most shocking of all -- confined to a wheelchair. Even once Diane has been caught and Chloe is off the meds, the effects are lasting, and Chloe has to use wheelchairs and canes for the rest of her life.

The real sting of the film, however, comes at the end. Seven years on, Diane is serving a lengthy sentence for her crimes and appears to be bed-bound, emaciated and suffering from unspecified illnesses. Turns out Chloe has been paying her mother regular visits, smuggling pills into prison to keep Diane sedate, unwell and, as seems to be the case, psychologically compromised.
