4. Humane

The feature debut of Caitlin Cronenberg - yes, daughter of genre legend David - certainly didn't leave viewers wanting for a provocative premise, taking place in the wake of an environmental collapse which prompts the world's governments to launch a euthanasia program as a means of population control.

Humane focuses on one family reckoning with their father's (Peter Gallagher) decision to be imminently euthanised, and though this is good for an hour's worth of intense squabbling, Cronenberg clearly comes unstuck when she needs to finish the story.

The rushed, slightly confusing ending wraps everything up in an all-too-neat bow for a film that, up to this point, thrived on its frantic messiness.

It's a vague cop-out of an ending that'll leave you questioning what you just watched in a bad way, undermining most of the tension leading up to it as well as the tenacity of its solid ensemble cast.
