Even most die-hard horror fans will admit that the vast majority of horror films aren't painting outside the firmly established lines, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Familiar and predictable genre exercises can still be plenty entertaining if they're well-crafted and solidly acted.

But it's always fun when a horror movie completely pulls the rug out from under audiences and does something wholly unexpected, in turn leaving a deeper impression in the days and weeks thereafter.

And that's absolutely true of these 10 recent horror movies, each of which - in one way or another - did something that just about nobody saw coming.

Perhaps the marketing cleverly hid an awesome surprise in the final movie, there was an epic twist nobody saw coming, or maybe the big surprise was just how good the film actually turned out to be.

No matter how they shocked the world, these horror movies all confounded expectations and strayed from the most obvious path, for better or worse but thankfully mostly for the better.

The lesson here? No matter how much you might think you've got a horror movie pegged, they can always do something you never anticipated...

10. Predator: Killer of Killers

Predator: Killer of Killers is a film that just kept continually surprising fans from announcement through to release.

During an interview late last year, 20th Century Studios executive Steve Asbell confirmed that, in addition to the upcoming Predator: Badlands, Prey filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg had made another, secret Predator movie due to release before Badlands.

And this past April, just two months before it released, the secret film was announced to be not only an animated Predator film, but an anthology focused on three warriors encountering predators throughout history.

The surprises sure kept coming once Killer of Killer came out, though - for one, it scored by far the strongest reviews of the series to date.

And then there's the narrative itself which, without giving too much away, takes an intriguing left turn in its third act which brings the three disparate stories together, before concluding with an unexpected cameo from a certain franchise hero.

Above all else, Killer of Killers confirmed that the Predator franchise is in very safe hands with Trachtenberg as its new shepherd.
