10 Recent Horror Movies That Were WAY Better Than Expected

9. Ash

Ash is the second horror feature from rapper Flying Lotus, whose surreal debut Kuso was largely dismissed by critics in 2017. And so, it was reasonable to have middling expectations for his next project, then - a sci-fi horror which wears its genre inspirations on its sleeve and was quietly dumped in U.S. cinemas for a few weeks before being sent to streaming with equally little fanfare.

This, combined with a rather mediocre trailer, didn't suggest that Flying Lotus had knocked his sophomore effort out of the park. However, Ash was received considerably more enthusiastically by critics than his debut, landing a solid 74% on the Tomatometer, all while many sci-fi and horror fans have already embraced it as a future cult classic.

Sure, it's shamelessly derivative of Alien, The Thing, and Event Horizon, but the filmmaker brings just enough of his own hypnotic, even hallucinogenic stamp, aided by strong performances from Eiza González and Aaron Paul, that Ash is actually a pleasantly surprising ride for open-minded genre fans.
