The trailer for Barbarian was an absolute beauty, instilling a sense of utter dread in its potential audience without giving too much away. In fact, if anything, said trailer had you thinking that Barbarian was one thing, when in reality it was entirely different.

In that early preview footage, this Zach Cregger offering used Georgina Campbell's Tess as our 'in', with Tess arriving at a rental property that's apparently been double-booked. There, Tess finds Keith (Bill SkarsgÄrd), the way-too-nice other person who has apparently been booked in at this house.

When Keith discovers a secret door which leads to an underground passage that's full of atmospheric dread, his attempts to entice Tess down to join him in exploring aren't exactly met all that positively. Being that she's only just met the guy, questions loom large over Keith's actual intentions.

Of course, Keith really was just a nice fella, but unfortunately he has his skull smashed in by a deformed figure known as the Mother. From there, the film switches its focus somewhat, with the owner of the house - Justin Long's AJ - visiting several weeks later, having his own encounter with Mother and finding Tess held hostage by this eerie presence.

The kicker here, is the Mother merely wants to look after Tess (and now AJ) as if they were her own children, as shown by a stomach-turning scene when Campbell's character drinks the breast milk of Mother; a scene that audiences very much were not ready for.
