2. Suspiria (2018)
Not all remakes are bad. And when you have Luca Guadagnino at the helm, director of 2017's critically acclaimed drama Call Me By Your Name, they probably won't be.
With Suspiria, Guadagnino made something uniquely his own. It's a movie with a distinct style, using its visuals and sound to create anxiety that is almost tangible. The desaturated colours give the film a sickly feeling and the effects and set design make you feel like you're watching a play.
The film follows a coven of witches running a dance studio who encounter Suzy, a promising young dancer desperate to join them and rise up the ranks. As Suzy advances in the program, we unravel more about the characters and the situation and fall into a state of hypnosis, struck by the weird, unexplainable occurrences that seem to escalate.
Suspiria is a movie that grinds and dulls your senses and pulls you into its trap. You try to make sense of what's going on but you're captivated by the rhythm of the editing and music. It's inescapable. So, if you're a fan of hypnotizing movements and numbed psychedelics, this is the perfect film.
