10 Recent Indie Horror Movies To Watch This Halloween

1. Bone Tomahawk (2015)

Black Coats Daughter
RLJ Entertainment

Western horror is surely one of the most underrepresented subgenres, and certainly when you include the caveat that the film also contain Kurt Russell as a mustache-toting sheriff. Bone Tomahawk is a cold and brutal film filled with violence, gore, and disturbing imagery. It is the epitome of an R-rating.

After a man's wife is abducted by a group of cave dwellers, a sheriff, his deputy, a gunslinger, and a cowboy hunt them down. However, though this isn't a complicated film, it is executed masterfully.

It builds throughout its runtime and lets you get acquainted with each of the aforementioned characters. The effects are especially well done and they go so far that they are revolting. It doesn't shy away from dark imagery but it rarely, if ever, feels exploitative. It instead seems to display brutality through an unfiltered lens.

With Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, and Matthew Fox leading the way, Bone Tomahawk is hard to watch but equally hard to look away from, resulting in an unforgettable film that will leave you shaking for days.
