7. Apostle

Apostle Dan Stevens
Netflix

The Raid director Gareth Evans returns with this grisly Netflix horror-thriller about a man (Dan Stevens) desperately attempting to rescue his sister from a cult residing in a remote Welsh island.

While it lacks the balletically brutal mayhem of Evans' martial arts masterworks, Apostle is a richly atmospheric slow-burn, driven by Stevens' stoic yet intense performance, and a cracking supporting cast (especially Michael Sheen as the cult's leader).

It takes a while to get to the red stuff, but the third act in particular delivers plenty of gnarly violence, and Evans categorically proves he's far from a one-trick genre pony.

With its unique setting, eerily entrancing cinematography and suffocating atmosphere, Apostle is a major horror win for the streaming giant.
