6. Unsane
Self-funded by director Steven Soderbergh and shot quietly last year entirely on iPhones, Unsane is a bold, boundary-smashing stab at otherwise fairly familiar genre material, elevated significantly by Claire Foy's excellent lead performance.
As a troubled woman imprisoned within a mental institution as she deals with a stalker (played by a sublimely creepy Joshua Leonard), Foy commands the screen at every moment, ensuring that even when the low-rent cinematography fails to impress, her performance keeps the film thoroughly captivating.
If nothing else it's a brave experiment that deserves your attention, and proof that talented filmmakers can produce tight, quality entertainment regardless of budgetary and technical constraints.
