On a devastated Earth overrun by lethal and ever-hearing predators of a possible extraterrestrial origin, the Abbotts struggle to survive in a desolate New York City in a new era of utter silence. To learn the rules of survival in this muted dystopia is essential, but an otherwise joyous event (a pregnancy) is threatening their already frail stability.
Horror movies are churned out by Hollywood on the regular, but it’s extremely rare to see a movie in this genre open to this level of acclaim. That’s because it’s rare to see a horror film with performances this outstanding and human drama this rich.
Godzilla: King of Monsters is essentially an unrealistic military-propaganda machine, showing the characters flying around in their somewhat-magical jet. The story line is so unclear that it has caused some confusion. One of the military characters plays himself, as well as his twin, however this is pulled off so badly that many people believed it was simply the same person in two places at once due to shoddy scripting.
A Quiet Place is anything but flimsy in the acting department. You find yourself despairing for the characters themselves and sympathizing with the all-too-human story. The narrative is crisp and clean, and the dialogue witty, placing it leagues above the reptilian-monster's latest silver screen appearance.
Somehow, a low-budget horror film written by two unknown screenwriters, starring and directed by a guy known for his work on sitcoms, managed to be not just good but great, a possible contender for one of the best films of 2018 and that simply makes Godzilla: King of Monsters look bad.
