James Gunn certainly pulled no punches in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, for while all of the Guardians surprisingly make it to the end of the movie in one piece, Rocket's (Bradley Cooper) devastatingly bleak backstory is tailor-made to upset the audience.

In flashbacks peppered throughout the threequel, we meet Rocket's fellow test subjects created by the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) - the otter Lylla (Linda Cardellini), walrus Teefs (Asim Chaudhry), and rabbit Floor (Mikaela Hoover).

And of course, it's a mere inevitability that the trio will die, as is brutally revealed later on in the movie.

When Rocket learns that he and his friends are imminently going to be killed, he stages an escape from their confinement, which unfortunately ends in tragedy.

As they prepare to flee, Lylla is shot dead by the High Evolutionary, and after the gunfight that ensues, Rocket turns back to find Teefs and Floor also shot to death.

It's completely harrowing, as it absolutely should be, but that doesn't mean audiences were emotionally prepared to see these adorable anthropomorphic animals grimly slaughtered.

As fitting an ending as Guardians Vol. 3 is for James Gunn's beloved heroes, this sequence will surely hurt its rewatch value considerably for many viewers.
