10 Recent Movie Deaths That Pissed Everyone Off

Though some complained that Companion's marketing shouldn't have revealed that protagonist Iris (Sophie Thatcher) was a robot, it nevertheless prevented audiences from figuring out the film's real twist that was being hidden in plain sight.

Mid-way through the movie we learn that Patrick (Lukas Gage), one of her "boyfriend" Josh's (Jack Quaid) friends, is secretly also a companion robot belonging to his own "boyfriend" Eli (Harvey Guillén).

Patrick is an innately intriguing and ultimately sympathetic "character" given that Eli is eventually killed and the scheming Josh hijacks Patrick, manipulating his programming to have him chase down Iris like, well, a terminator.

Near the end of the movie, though, Iris manages to prevent Patrick from killing her by reminding him of his memories with Eli, at which point Patrick, overwhelmed with grief and guilt, kills himself by shoving an electric cattle prod in his mouth.

That's one hell of a sad end for a robot who demonstrated awareness of his own artificial existence, and yet still loved Eli all the same.
