10 Recent Movie Deaths That Pissed Everyone Off
7. Mark Darcy - Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy
There was considerable skepticism surrounding the fourth Bridget Jones movie given the wildly polarising reception to the 2013 novel it was based on, which made the hugely divisive decision to kill off Bridget's (Renee Zellweger) husband Mark Darcy (Hugh Grant).
And indeed, there's no denying that Mark's shock death in a landmine explosion while on a humanitarian mission is a colossal bummer - a depressing denial of Bridget and Mark's seemingly happily-ever-after ending at the conclusion of the previous film, Bridget Jones's Baby.
The result is a film that's considerably less fun and frothy than the previous three, though to the filmmakers' credit, it does function as a genuinely moving exploration of grief.
And so, while Mark's death is devastating for anyone who's been following the franchise since the start, the film at least dares to take it seriously and engage fully with it, rather than treat it as a mere mild inconvenience for Bridget to overcome.
