9. Luther Stickell - Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning
It was basically expected that another core member of Ethan Hunt's (Tom Cruise) team was going to die in the "final" Mission: Impossible movie, and most of the smart money was on Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames).
After all Luther is effectively the conscience of the team, and really far more of a real character than Ethan Hunt ever has been, so there was no easier way to wring some pathos from the death of a franchise veteran.
And indeed, Luther perishes in The Final Reckoning's first act, sacrificing himself in order to minimise the destruction of a bomb planted by Gabriel (Esai Morales) - one capable of otherwise destroying London.
Though Ving Rhames acted the hell out of his final scene, it was still a massive bummer to see Luther go out like that, especially as the film's breakneck pace doesn't really give the team time to mourn his demise - as was also a problem with Ilsa's (Rebecca Ferguson) death in the previous movie.
