2. Remember Me (2011)

Buried Ending
Summit Entertainment

For the most part, Remember Me is a pretty typical middle-of-the-road romance film. Following the story of Ally Craig, a New York University student who meets Tyler after the death of her mother. Tyler is a honest, if slightly rash, individual who goes throughout the film following his heart and doing all that he can to prove to Ally that he is genuinely in love with her.

The film was nominated for two awards at the 2010 Teen Choice Awards and the performances of Robert Pattinson as Tyler and Emilie de Ravin as Ally were generally seen as being one of the film's stronger points, helping to create two genuinely likeable leads in what is a pretty straight-lined release.

The movie goes full 'WTF' with its ending however. The film begins wrapping up in pretty usual style: Tyler, who has just come off announcing his love for Ally, is told by his father that he is going to be late for their meeting but that he's welcome to wait for him at his office. We then pan over to Tyler's sister in school who is making a note of the day's date: September 11, 2001.

You wouldn't have ever thought a film could be so ballsy, but one of Remember Me's final shots is of Tyler looking out from the 101st floor of the World Trade Centre as the 9/11 terrorist attacks begin.
