3. Gone Girl (2014)
2014 Psychological thriller Gone Girl is a cleverly composed, deeply unsettling movie that hits you every time you watch it. Rosamund Pike's performance as Amy Dunne is, of course, at the very heart of this success as she creates a believable and seriously unsettling antagonist that you can't help but love to hate.
Gone Girl is the story of Nick Dunne returning from work one day only to find his wife missing. He is arrested on suspicion of killing his wife, Amy, but the reality is that the evidence has been planted by his wife who is living alive and well across the country. Nick's arrest turns out to be an act of revenge by Amy, who discovered that her husband was having an affair with one of his pupils after the global recession hit.
Given how most of the film is spent showcasing Amy's psychopathic, manipulative ways, you would be forgiven for thinking that the film's finale would be her sitting on the receiving end of some pretty hard-hitting karma. The reality, however, is that Amy actually ends the film back on top. Having stolen some of Nick's semen, Amy impregnates herself and practically blackmails her husband into staying with her, giving her a nice and secure future with the man whose life she nearly destroyed.
