7. Ruth Was Longlegs' Apprentice - Longlegs

Longlegs certainly wasn't a movie that needed a twist, and honestly, the fact that the titular serial killer (Nicolas Cage) takes himself out before the climax is plenty surprise for one movie.

But filmmaker Osgood Perkins had one more ace to play, as following Longlegs' death, we learn that he had a secret accomplice helping him carry out his murders - Ruth Harker (Alicia Witt), the mother of FBI agent protagonist Lee (Maika Monroe).

It turns out that Longlegs intended to kill Lee when she was a child, but she was spared when Ruth agreed to assist Longlegs in his killings, delivering satanic dolls to targeted families which would then induce each family's patriarch to commit familicide.

It's a twisted revelation which puts Lee in one hell of a tricky predicament, especially as she's then forced to shoot her own mother in the head when she runs to attack her.

As a showcase for the underappreciated talents of Alicia Witt, Ruth is indeed quite the role.
