10 Recent Movie Plot Twists Nobody Saw Coming
5. Arthur Gets Killed By The "Real" Joker - Joker: Folie à Deux
There are few recent movie endings more polarising, or perhaps outright hated, than that of Joker: Folie à Deux.
Todd Phillips' self-imploding sequel firmly closed the book on Arthur Fleck's (Joaquin Phoenix) story by not only having him renounce the Joker name at film's end, but getting him shanked by the apparently "real" Joker.
In the final scene, an imprisoned Arthur has an altercation with another inmate, who promptly tells him a joke and subsequently stabs him repeatedly, leaving him to bleed out.
And if the implication isn't yet clear enough, the inmate in question can be seen carving a smile on his face with the shank, heavily suggesting that he is the real, canonical Joker we all know, and Arthur was basically just some dude who inspired him.
Naturally for the great many who bought into Arthur Fleck being the card-carrying Joker of this universe, it was one hell of a deflating twist, albeit one that just about nobody predicted.
