Jeremy Saulnier's new thriller Rebel Ridge tees up many mysteries throughout its tightly wound story, perhaps the most pressing of which is the identity of Serpico - a police officer who is secretly informing on his own force's corrupt practises.

We're led to believe that the cop in question is most likely the helpful Officer Sims (Zsané Jhé) - who, like embattled protagonist Terry (Aaron Pierre), is Black - though in the third act we learn that Serpico is actually Officer Marston (David Denman).

This is especially surprising given that Marston was one of the cops who ran Terry off the road at the start of the movie and seized bail money intended for his cousin, seeming to earmark him as just another corrupt, racist cop.

The film never clearly reconciles Marston's involvement in that initial confrontation, though it's clear from his subsequent actions that he's on Terry's side when it matters most.
