10 Recent Movie Remakes That You Already Forgot Existed

9. Straw Dogs (2011)

Robocop Joel Kinnaman
Screen Gems

The Original: 1971's Straw Dogs is Sam Peckinpah's glorious ode to violence; a relentlessly uncomfortable masterpiece that asks audiences to imagine what they'd do if they moved to rural England and the local hooligans set out to ruin their lives. Cats are killed; wives are raped, and at the centre of it all, Dustin Hoffman, who goes from nebbish mathematician to primal madman - as the poster warns, "you can push a guy to the limit... but expect consequences."

The Forgotten Remake: Hollywood got around to remaking Straw Dogs because all the ingredients looked perfect: classic film status, a simple plot, the potential to market a violent film to mass audiences looking for a weekend horror film.

But don't underestimate the repellent power of casting James Marsden as your leading man: audiences rallied against this rehash and it resulted in a box office flop - a good thing, given that it was about as clumsy and unoriginal as remakes come, the only novel idea being switching-up the setting from Cornwall to Mississippi.

It was easy to forget that this Straw Dogs came into our lives, then, because we chose to ignore it from the beginning. So unnecessary the ground swallowed it up.
