10 Recent Movie Trailers That Totally Lied To You
9. Presence
The trailers for Steven Soderbergh's new film Presence absolutely sold it as a horror flick, focusing on what appears to be a haunted house amid eerie dialogues about death, while including critical pull quotes hyping it up as a Really Scary Movie.
But in actuality, Presence is really more of a family drama focused on the personal turmoil of the Paynes.
Sure, there's a ghost that happens to be hanging out in their home, but the supernatural elements are rather subdued for the most part, and ultimately feel more at home under the "thriller" label than horror.
It's not remotely surprising that distributor Neon would play-up the horror angle given the genre's immense popularity, as well as the more limited audience interest in a drama with fringe genre elements.
However, they also resultingly set audience expectations totally wrong, ensuring it also wasn't a shock that Presence nabbed a poor "C+" CinemaScore from general viewers.
