10. The Immigrant

Tomatometer rating: 88%Gross: $5.9 million Even from a relatively low $16 million budget (low for an epic period piece featuring three major stars, anyway), The Immigrant was still a massive box office disappointment. And it becomes more so when you realise the mighty Weinstein Company was behind its distribution (they decided to dump it on the quiet). Still, at least folks in the US had a chance to see it - The Immigrant hasn't even had an official release in the UK yet. Which means British audiences have completely missed out on one of the greatest period pieces in recent years, one that features genuinely Oscar-worthy turns from Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix, as a Polish immigrant-turned-prostitute and her insecure pimp. Along with the also impressive Jeremy Renner, Cotillard and Phoenix do some of their most stellar work against the backdrop of 1920s New York, gorgeously bathed in the glow of Darius Khondji's golden autumn photography. If Elia Kazan was still around, this is what his comeback movie might look like.
