One of the great things about Jon Favreau is that he's happy to take the time out from making huge blockbusters such as the Iron Man movies and the upcoming live action version of The Jungle Book to work on smaller projects more reminiscent of his earlier independent films. Chef is such a project, dropping the superhero antics in favour of an intimate portrait of a chef who gets caught up in an intractable feud with a prominent food critic. The incredibly sweary script is also frequently funny, while appearances from Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jnr. add some A-list class to the proceedings. Still, the fact that the feud between the chef and critic plays out largely on social media - with Twitter comments appearing on-screen (a popular gimmick in many recent movies) - means that Chef will inevitably feel dated when watched further down the line. The delicious food seen on screen, on the other hand, will always look tasty.
