10 Recent Movies It's Cool To Hate

2. Joker

The Last Jedi
Warner Bros.

The most recent take on the Prince Clown of Crime was met with mass critical acclaim, receiving a whopping 11 nominations at this years Oscars. Although coming away with a comparatively lacklustre two awards, it showed that the gritty origin story was not as loved as once thought.

Clashing with an onslaught of criticism for its depictions of mental health, apparent condoning of violence and links with director Todd Phillip’s statements on woke culture, Joker was the most popular film to slam just a few months ago. Despite the fact that Joaquin Phoenix delivered a performance that the Academy could not ignore, with an interpretation of the Joker that could even stand shoulder to shoulder with the late Heath Ledger.

It seemed that many people just weren’t ready for a gritty, grounded and mature comic-book adaptation. Some were disappointed by the films thoughtfulness, some found the violence gruelling, and the film's line-up against the much-loved Parasite, Little Women, and 1917 at this year's Oscars made it all the more commonly placed in hot-lists of hatred.
