10 Recent Movies It's Cool To Hate
1. Mother!
David Aronofsky is no stranger to weird films, yet it was his most recent that had heads spinning and the hate rife. His odd narrative of God, Mother Nature, and biblical characters through a household drama, had many labelling the film as pretentious. And while Mother! is an esoteric experience, with an absolutely bonkers last act that would leave anyone scratching their head upon first viewing, it most definitely had a lot to say.
Commenting on the relationships between man, God and Earth, Mother! ostracised an audience that had been sold a horror film, by delivering them a relative art-house affair. Traditionally a film of this type would be left to the film scholars and critics, yet with big names such as Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer attached, it attracted in mass audiences that simply weren’t going to connect with a film like this.
That is not to say that Mother! is an entirely thrilling experience, as when the message becomes apparent it isn’t quite on the nose, but more that the nose is broken. Yet the film’s symbolic tendencies left it open to a heightened sense of hatred, where many became outsiders when stating that the film was anything other than bad.
