8. In a Violent Nature

Slasher movies are of course a dime a dozen in the horror realm, but how many of them end up premiering at the Sundance Film Festival? That's because Chris Nash's In a Violent Nature came to market with one hell of a unique hook - it was styled as an arthouse take on the typical slasher formula, defined by a slow pace and general lack of dialogue.

More to the point, In a Violent Nature also mostly unfolds from the perspective of the killer, Johnny (Ry Barrett), rather than his meat-sack victims, who are nudged to the periphery for much of the runtime. The film certainly proved divisive with mainstream viewers, but that's rather the point - anyone going into this expecting the familiar was bound to be bewildered by its desire to be anything but.

That doesn't mean all of its choices fully worked or anyone who rubbished it was simply an uncultured swine, but for better or worse, this was absolutely a piece of cinema that snuck up on audiences and caught them unawares.
