10 Recent Movies Nobody Saw Coming
7. Sisu
Sisu is proof perfect of how refreshing it is for a movie to be thrown into cinemas without months and months of hype and glossy marketing, but instead materialise more-or-less out of nowhere and deliver exactly what it promises.
The Finnish war actioner, centered around a seemingly unstoppable former Finnish Commando (Jorma Tommila) who takes on a Nazi death squad, was minimally marketed prior to its recent release.
However, that didn't stop it grossing an impressive $12.5 million globally against a $6.5 million budget, spurred on by strong critical reviews and positive word-of-mouth alike. Favourable comparisons to the John Wick franchise sure didn't hurt.
For context, Sisu ended up grossing more at the box office than movies starring Joaquin Phoenix (Beau Is Afraid), Mark Hamill (The Machine), Gerard Butler (Kandahar), Ben Affleck (Hypnotic), and Liam Neeson (Marlowe). Impressive, especially considering it had a relatively limited release in the U.S.
Ultimately when you factor in VOD profits, this thing was way more of a success than anybody could've ever anticipated. And when it's a movie made with such creativity and conviction, you absolutely love to see it.
