Ron Howard's recent dramatisation of the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue, Thirteen Lives, had a lot to live up to.

For starters, an extremely compelling documentary on the subject, The Rescue, was released last year while Howard's film was in post-production, and set an almost impossibly high ceiling for any feature adaptation of the subject to meet.

And yet, it was reported at the start of the year that Thirteen Lives received the best test audience scores in MGM's history, causing many to assume that Howard's film was a sure-fire awards contender.

But following Amazon's acquisition of MGM, Thirteen Lives had only a small theatrical run before hitting Amazon Prime Video fairly quietly in early August.

Ultimately anyone able to separate Howard's film from both The Rescue and those earlier reports about record test scores would be left with a very competent and entertaining film, even if it's certainly not better than The Rescue or a major awards contender in any way.
