There was an enormous amount of pressure put upon the third Fantastic Beasts film, The Secrets of Dumbledore, to basically course-correct the troubled franchise and get everything back on track.

This was a two-pronged approach by Warner Bros. - listening to the vocal complaints about The Crimes of Grindelwald's story, and switching out Johnny Depp for Mads Mikkelsen in the role of Grindelwald per Depp's prior legal controversies.

And while audiences en masse certainly didn't show up for the film at the box office, there was very much a sentiment that The Secrets of Dumbledore had to fix the flagging series, no matter the last-minute recasting of Grindelwald and significant production problems during a particularly tricky period of the pandemic.

Ultimately The Secrets of Dumbledore was a solid if thorughly imperfect improvement over its predecessor, and Mikkelsen's performance as Grindelwald was largely praised, even if it certainly wasn't enough to bring Fantastic Beasts storming back to crowd-pleasing glory.
