10 Recent Movies That Blew Great Concepts

7. Freaky

The premise for Freaky is so freakin' genius it's really quite surprising it hasn't been done already - what if you collided the prototypical slasher movie formula with a body swap comedy?

Freaky - or as it was originally called, Freaky Friday the 13th - stars Kathryn Newton and Vince Vaughn as a teenage girl and deranged serial killer who, as a result of a bizarre ritual, end up swapping bodies.

Freaky is appealingly gory and boasts a strong performance from Vaughn as a girl in a middle-aged man's body, but conceptually the film suffers from the same issue as filmmaker Christopher Landon's Happy Death Day movies - it believes its central concept brilliant enough that it doesn't feel the need to do much more with it.

The movie's better elements - that is, the kills and everything Vaughn does - is ultimately bogged down by an excess of wretched teen dialogue and an unhealthy scoop of family melodrama to boot.

Again, not bad overall, but clearly a few drafts away from being a truly strong rendition of an amazing setup.
