After the success of Lin-Manuel Miranda's 2005 Broadway musical, In the Heights, it wasn't long before studios were fighting over adapting this vibrant salsa-filled drama for the big screen.

But the road to film adaptations is never easy, especially for musicals. Due to changes of director and studio, it took a staggering 13 years for the In the Heights movie to become a reality.

In a way, this massive delay looked to benefit the project. Since Miranda was at the pinnacle of his popularity thanks to the unprecedented success of Hamilton, any film associated with him seemed destined for glory.

Despite winning four Tonys (including Best Musical), In the Heights has never generated the same success as other musicals like The Lion King, Chicago, or Wicked.

It also didn't help that the film lacked star power and iconic songs. Even though Les Miserables' film adaptation was heavily criticised for some of its singing (cough, cough, Russel Crowe), it was a smash-hit because it had big names and music that everyone recognises. Because In the Heights lacked either, the film adaption was screwed from the beginning.
