6. Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar

The Tomorrow War
Lionsgate

The early marketing for Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar did it absolutely no favours whatsoever, with the first teaser trailer trying to make a joke out of not showing the faces of stars Kristen Wiig or Annie Mumolo, but ultimately just leaving people completely confused about what it was.

Though originally slated to bow last summer, back in January Lionsgate announced that Barb and Star's theatrical release had been cancelled due to the pandemic, with many assuming its VOD release was a convenient way for the studio to quietly dump a comedy dud.

And yet, arriving with no hype whatsoever, Barb & Star turned out to be one of the year's funniest films so far - an outrageously surreal, Austin Powers-esque spy comedy which sees Wiig and Mumolo firing on all cylinders.

The biggest surprise isn't even its impressive commercial performance on VOD, though, but the show-stealing supporting turn by Jamie Dornan, who seems like he's having the time of his life playing the pair's kooky love interest.

For what seemed like a throwaway, forgettable studio comedy to become a guaranteed cult classic in the making is quite the glow-up indeed.
