7. The Fear Street Trilogy

The Tomorrow War
Netflix

Netflix's slate of original movie releases has been relatively underwhelming as of late, so it was reasonable to be skeptical about the Fear Street trilogy - three movies adapted from R.L. Stine's series of teen horror novels, which the streamer purchased from Fox after they were acquired by Disney.

The reasons to keep your expectations low were myriad: Hollywood has been trying to adapt the books for almost 25 years, these films sat in post-production limbo for almost two years, were filmed to be R-rated despite the source material being decidedly PG, and were directed by a filmmaker with one moderately-received horror movie credit to her name - Honeymoon's Leigh Janiak.

But the trilogy, released over a period of three weeks earlier this summer, was met with consistently high reviews from critics and audiences alike, serving as a firm introduction to classic horror for younger audiences while refusing to skimp on the gore.

Given the sheer ambition of the project and the amount of time it took to finally come to audiences, the skepticism was certainly justified though thankfully proven wrong.
