10 Recent Movies That Tried Way Too Hard To Be Clever

9. The Platform

The Spanish (or English-dubbed) film The Platform is a movie so wild and jaw-dropping it has to be seen to be believed.

The plot of the film centers around an alternative dystopian society in which prisoners (or volunteers) are fed from a descending platform. Those at the top are gifted with untouched, freshly cooked luxury meals, and as the platform drops the occupants of the lower levels must dine on the scraps and leftovers.

The desperate, crab-in-a-bucket mentality of the participants makes for interesting and thought provoking comments about how wealth should be distributed, and how those at the top despise anyone below them.

As the film continues you can see the cogs of the writers turn, but then once the film flirts with a revolution and rebellion concept it begins to crawl up its own bum.

Platform teases other interesting plot devices; but instead doubles down on a pretentious narrative that is non-sequential to what we saw previously.

Had the movie stuck to being a survival horror between the main protagonist and his revolving door of diverse cell-mates, it would have been an exceptional movie that would be worth re-watching over and over again.

Preferably not on a full stomach.

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
