10 Recent Movies That Were Sent Out To Die

4. Hotel Mumbai

Anna Luc Besson
Bleecker Street

You'd be forgiven for never having heard of this film.

A drama starring Dev Patel concerning the 2008 Mumbai attacks, the film had its premiere at the 2018 Toronto film festival and received pretty good reviews.

Unfortunately, a lot of festival hits never actually see their success replicated in the real market. This is the kind of film with an incredibly limited release in pretty much every country. They fail to secure releases in major cinema chains and often pop up in the small independent ones instead, avoiding major marketing fees but also avoiding any sort of public awareness or availability - even for those that followed its success on the festival circuit and would have wanted to see it in limited release.

This film had added difficulty in its release schedule, as Hotel Mumbai was caught up in the Weinstein scandal and lost its distributor when the company closed prior to its festival release. The film therefore had to seek out smaller distributors following its showings that were willing to take on the risk of a film so heavily associated with Harvey Weinstein's production.

It also lost Netflix distribution India and other Asian territories, losing it exposure in a market that would have appreciated the story it told. It is set to be a Sky Cinema original in the UK in September.

Chances are I’m watching a movie or replaying Mass Effect rather than doing anything productive.
