The marketing for the new Amy Adams movie Nightbitch unequivocally sold it to the horror crowd, presenting it as a black comedy about parenting in which Adams' overworked wife-mother protagonist becomes convinced she's turning into a dog.

It's an amusingly left-field idea for a movie, and to see an actress as celebrated as Adams sinking her teeth wholeheartedly into the horror genre was always going to be of interest to many.

Yet Nightbitch was ultimately something of a bait-and-switch, because it isn't really a horror film at all - it's a family drama with some blackly comedic fantasy elements and... that's about it.

Even in its gnarliest moments, Nightbitch only skirts on the fringes of body horror.

Far from the more transgressive, edgy film people were expecting, this is actually 90% of a fairly conventional family drama with a 10% helping of weird.

It's not a bad movie by any means, just one that fails to deliver on the bonkers potential of its premise.
