Happy Death Day centres around a sorority student called Tree who's killed by a masked assailant. She wakes up and soon realises time resets to the moment she wakes up every time she's killed.

Much like Groundhog's Day, Happy Death Day never divulges how Tree got stuck in this predicament. However, the sequel, Happy Day 2U, explains how her fellow students built a quantum reactor (as college students do), which caused Tree to time-travel.

Although the film concludes with the reactor being confiscated by government officials, a stinger shows Tree transported to a DARPA lab, where the machine is held. Wanting to use the device to experiment with time-travel, the agent asks Tree if she can think of a potential guinea pig.

The scene suddenly cuts to Tree's bully, Danielle, screaming in her bed, implying she's trapped in a time-loop.

Even though some viewers believed this stinger is a joke-ending, a third entry called Happy Death Day to Us was planned. Since Happy Death Day 2U recouped seven times its budget, greenlighting a sequel is completely warranted. But for whatever reason, nothing came of it.
