7. Total Recall (2012)
RottenTomatoes Score - 47% Compared To - Total Recall (1990) - 78% Another of Arnold Schwarzenegger's better efforts was the 1990 version of Total Recall, which took inspiration from one of Philip K. Dick's many excellent science fiction stories. It still inspires debate to this day, as fans ponder whether Arnie's 'real' character is Douglas Quaid, an ordinary construction worker who dreams of visiting Mars, or Carl Hauser, the regime-toppling secret agent identity that he assumes after having false memories of the planet implanted into his mind. Good villainous turns from Sharon Stone (as Quaid's wife), Ronny Cox (as 'big bad' Vilos Cohaagen) and Michael Ironside (as his henchman) ensure that the film isn't just a one man show, which is the case with so many of Schwarzenegger's films. The identity enigma remains in the 2012 remake of the film, which saw Len Wiseman take over Paul Verhoeven's directorial duties and cast Colin Farrell as Quaid, Kate Beckinsale as Lori and Bryan Cranston as Cohaagen. Limiting the setting to Earth, in contrast to the original's Mars escapades, the film is exceedingly bland throughout, lacking the lighthearted humour that gave the original much of its charm and suffering at the American box office as a result.
