10 Relentlessly Violent Mean-Spirited Films

9. August Underground (2001)

One of the most realistically portrayed simulated snuff films you€˜ll see; two serial killers go on a murdering binge as one films the outcome from behind a video camera. August Underground is just as depraved and disgusting as you€™d expect a film about two sociopathic sexual deviants to be. The film doesn't waste anytime building the characters up, we know nothing about these murderers or their victims. The story starts with the film's characters torturing a lady in the basement of a house. By throwing us straight in, it makes us as an audience instantly question what it is we€™re watching. Also, the fact that the movie is so badly shot helps add to the found footage vibe the film was going for. Unlike big screen films like Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity where everything happening is always conveniently framed, this film frames next to nothing. Whether intentional or not, the end result is indeed shocking and sickening. The film was followed by two equally disturbing sequels, August Underground€™s Mordum in 2003, and August Underground€™s Penance in 2007.
